Marc Jornet Sanz

Marc Jornet Sanz is a Spanish mental calculator who began competing in international mental calculation competitions in 2010. He has competed in the Mental Calculation World Cup on three occasions, finishing second overall in 2010 and 2014, and fifth in 2018. In individual events, he finished top-two in multiplication in all three events —- winning twice —- won calendar dates on two occasions, and finished top-three in addition twice. Marc’s calendar date score remains a top-three score at the Mental Calculation World Cup.

After five years of retirement from mental calculation, Marc returned to participate in Calculation League in 2024. While Marc’s practice and accomplishments generally relate to “standard” tasks, he enjoys and emphasizes a variety of standard tasks, including multiplication (AxB), division, square roots and cube roots, calendar dates, and sum of squares. He even practices long roots, doing 30-digit square roots, as well as 20/10 divisions, and likes to practice alternative strategies (such as left to right multiplication) or formats (such as oral questions).

Outside of mental calculation, Marc is a mathematician holding a Ph.D from Technical University of Valencia and his research focuses on stochastic and fractional differential equations. At 28 years old, he became the youngest mathematician to win the Spanish Society for Applied Mathematics’ award for research by a mathematician under 34 years old. Marc enjoys analyzing the connections between mental calculation and mathematics, especially when advanced mathematics informs the approach to solving seemingly simple arithmetic.

Marc also enjoys athletics, particularly European football, philology, and researching soroban masters.
