Japanese Soroban Rating Test

-The test below is derived from a Japanese test used to rate mental arithmetic competitors in Japan. It is also the basis for a monthly remote test that is taken by a large number of participants.

-There are three levels for the test. F2 is the beginner level. F1 is for everyone from “advanced beginners” upwards. F0 is for highly experienced mental arithmetic practitioners.

-Each session is composed of three sections: (1) addition/subtraction; (2) multiplication; and (3) division. The regular length test has a 5 minute limit per section. The mini test has one-fifth the number of questions and has a 1 minute limit per section.

-Score is simply the number of correct answers submitted on the test.

-After completing a session, the simulator will assign you a kyu or a dan. Kyus refer to “in training” levels while dans are reserved for experienced competitors. There are 10 kyus and 10 dans. Competitors progress from kyu 10 to kyu 1 and then 1st dan to 10th dan.

-The app will display a results page that shows number correct and time taken for each of the three sections. It will also display any questions answered incorrectly with the submitted and correct answer.

-For the five monthly competitions from May 2024 to September 2024, the following were the median results for regular length (5x mini length):

F1: 1st place: 201 seconds; 2nd place: 204 seconds; 3rd place: 219 seconds; 5th place: 233 seconds; 10th place: 304 seconds; 20th place 342 seconds; 40th place 545 seconds; 100th place 149/150; 250th place 147/150; 500th place 141/150; 1000th place 116/150
