FAQ
-
How do I start using the app?
A user must enter their “name” and choose a “room”. Anything can be entered in “room” field. You could write “12345” or “room 88” or “dog” or “asdf”. When you join a room in single player, the session starts after a countdown. When you join a room in multiplayer, you will receive an alert that confirms you joined the room. The game starts after a countdown upon a second player joining the same room.
-
What are the league modes?
The league modes correspond to the levels on the league simulator. From easiest to most difficult, the levels are: qualification, regular season, playoffs, and finals.
-
How do the task modes work?
There are ten individual task modes, each including five levels. The task modes can be played single player (if the user selects number of questions) or multiplayer (if the multiplayer selects "league match"). In multiplayer task mode, the match continues until the earlier of: (1) 10 minutes; or (2) one competitor obtaining a 30 point lead.
In task modes, the user has a maximum of 60 seconds per question.
-
How do single player and multiplayer options work?
The last option the user selects is either: (1) number of questions (single player); and (2) league match (multiplayer).
In single player, user will receive the number of questions requested. Single player mode also contains a skip button allowing the user to skip to the next question. Please note that a user must still join a room in single player.
In multiplayer league modes users receive questions until either: (a) one competitor obtains a 30 point lead and a certain amount of time has passed (10 minutes on qualification or regular season, 15 minutes on playoffs and 20 minutes on finals) or (b) a certain time has passed (20 minutes on qualification and regular season, 30 minutes on playoffs, and 40 minutes on finals). In playoffs and finals mode, the match continues indefinitely until one competitor has a ten point lead even if condition b) is satisfied.
In multiplayer task modes, the gameplay follows the conditions outline in the previous section.
-
How does the scoring work?
A correct answer is one point (see below for required accuracy for decimal answers). There is no penalty for an incorrect answer. There is a maximum of five attempts per question. Users have either 30 seconds (league modes) or 60 seconds (task modes) to answer the question (timer is in upper-right corner of screen). The app moves to the next question upon the earlier of: (a) submission of a correct answer; or (b) expiration of the timer. On single player modes, there is also a skip button.
The app makes use of non-integer answers. The required accuracy is the same as on the league simulator: 2 significant digits for answers between -100 and 100 and the nearest integer (.5) for answers less than -100 or more than 100.
-
What types of feedback does the app provide?
At the end of the session, the app provides information regarding the number correct, total attempted, and total time taken. If playing on league mode, this information is broken down into the four Calculation League categories. The app also provides question by question detail --- the question, whether it was skipped, and the total time taken.
-
What are the types of questions in league modes?
Currently, there are two types of questions in the app: multioperation questions that include 2-10 operations (only standard operations — +, -, *, /) and questions drawn from a list of custom formats containing thousands of different formats representative of questions asked at higher level calculation competitions.
Multioperation and custom format questions are arranged in three difficulty categories and the frequency of questions from each category depends upon the app level selected.
The ratio between multioperation and custom format questions is randomized at the beginning of the multiplayer match. Custom format questions will be between 10% and 50% of total questions. For single player mode, the user can determine their preferred ratio of multioperation and custom questions.
-
How do the colors work?
The background color wheel controls the background color. The text color wheel controls the question and answer text. The info color wheel controls the text color for the timers, scoring, and match mode.
-
What are the formatting options?
In addition to being able to modify the color of the different elements, the formatting options include the ability to change the font size, spacing, and thickness for the calculation questions and the various gameplay elements. By default, the options are set to appropriate options for a smaller laptop. If you are using a larger or smaller screen, you may want to change the font sizes.
-
How do I know if a competitor is in a room?
As of Februrary 2024, you will receive an alert 2-3 seconds after joining that provides you information about any waiting players. The match settings are selected by the player who creates the room.
-
How do I answer questions which include a series of integers?
For factorization and sum of square questions, the user must type the integers separated by a space. The integers can be typed in any order. For system of equations questions, the integers must also be separated by a space, but the integers must be typed in the order they are displayed in the system of equations (reading from left to right).
-
What happens if I get disconnected during a match? How do I return to the main screen?
If you are disconnected or exit out of the match, you may rejoin the match by reentering your name and room exactly the same (including capitalization and spacing, if any) as when you joined the match. Your opponent will not be paused while you are disconnected.
At any point, whether while in a waiting room, during a match, or after the match ends, refreshing your page will return you to the “home” page of the app.
Please note that room are currently cleared of data after 60 minutes. If you attempt to rejoin after this period, the app will create a new room.
-
Can I use the app on mobile?
You can certainly try. As of Februrary 2024, the app is not designed to support mobile use so you may encounter some difficulties (this also applies to tablet use). The extent of the difficulties will depend on the specific size of your screen and your browser settings.
-
What improvements to the app are expected?
The app is intended to be expanded to provide for user accounts with limited statistical and rating information, a spectator mode, and additional types of tasks. The app will also undergo periodic UI enhancements.
